For many, reaching retirement can be exciting but also quite daunting.  Retirement marks a new chapter in your life and it doesn’t have to signal the end of a full and active life; in fact, for many retirees, they often question and wonder how they found time to work before they retired!!! Yes, this time of your life can be the perfect time to try new things, learn new skills, take up new hobbies and there’s never been a better time to get your health in check.

Incorporating exercise in to your new ‘work-free’ routine will not only benefit your physical health but it can also be good news for your social life too, allowing you to live life to the full.  As you know, regular exercise can prevent or even provide relief from many common illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, and arthritis, to name a few.  That’s why it should be made a priority whatever stage of life and it’s never too late to start.  

If you’re new to exercise, here is a rundown of the 1Life classes available at your local gym to try out.  These are the perfect starting point to ease you in to a more active lifestyle. 

Yoga – This class focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing by concentrating on postures and breathing.  Dress in comfortable clothing which won’t restrict your movement and enjoy time out at this relaxing class.

Les Mills Body Balance - BODYBALANCE™ is a new yoga class for anyone and everyone.  The class focuses on a range of movements and motion set to music that will improve your mind, your body and your life!  Perfect if you’re looking for something a bit more upbeat and enjoy working out to music.

Pilates – The class is based on a series of low repetition, low impact stretching and conditioning exercises.  Pilates will improve your posture and build your core strength (back, abdominal and pelvic muscles).  A great introduction to stretching exercises beneficial to all regardless of your current fitness levels.

Zumba – A fun class set to music and based around dance moves.  You’ll be too busy having fun to even realise you’re exercising!

Aqua classes – A range of aerobic based classes held in the pool.  The water adds resistance to help you tone up while reducing stress on your joints.  A full body workout perfect for any age or ability.

Remember to take things slow if you’re new to exercise, don’t overdo things and stay within your comfort zone.  You’re aiming to raise your heart beat and get a little out of breath but you should still be able to hold a conversation while you work out.  Stick with it and you’ll soon see improvements in your fitness levels and over time will be able to push yourself a little further.  Remember, any physical activity is better than none but work towards three classes each week to really see and feel the benefit.

For those of you who are looking to work up a bit more of a sweat, these could be the perfect classes for you to try:

50+ Aerobics – An upbeat aerobic group class which will put you through your paces but has been specifically tailored to suit our over 50’s members.

Les Mills Body Pump – Predominantly a weights class set to music the bending and stretching involved in the class means you get the benefit of stretching some major muscle groups while building your strength, all at your own pace.

Les Mills Body Step - Step your way to better health with this fast-paced, explosive step class that will leave you upbeat as well as providing a full body workout.  .

Group Cycling – A fast-paced work out set to music based on stationary bikes which takes you on a journey of hills, sprints and flat riding - with the added benefit of being low impact.  

Group exercise can be a great motivator so if you need that extra push to get active, signing up for some weekly classes or having a gym buddy can help you to stay on track with your new healthy lifestyle.
