If you are stepping up your training ahead of summer, there has never been a better time to revamp your active-wear.  Dedicated fashion followers will be pleased to know that trends aren’t just for the catwalk, they also extend to active-wear too, allowing you to create a workout wardrobe that is bang on trend.

Fitness wear has also become much more accessible, with many high-street stores and even supermarkets offering their own ranges which can be an affordable option.  Not to mention the dedicated online stores too; nowadays you’re truly spoilt for choice.

Feel good fashion

Fitness fashion has come on a long way in recent years and there is now a huge choice available.  So whether you prioritise fashion over comfort or are in either the save or spurge camp, does it really matter what you wear to the gym?

Well, according to research it does! A direct link has been found between what we wear and how we perform.  Not only does appropriate clothing and footwear reduce the risk of injury, wearing workout clothing that you feel comfortable in can boost your confidence as well as your motivation levels and make the gym a far more enjoyable experience.

What’s in store for 2019?

We’ve put together a round-up of some of the top trends, which are creating waves in the world of workout-wear.

1. Black takes a back-seat

This season, black is taking a back seat in favour of bold prints and vibrant colours.  Don’t be afraid to get creative with your outfits by mixing colours and prints for a real splash of colour.  Anything goes here so don’t hold back.

Don’t worry if you don’t feel brave enough to embrace this trend just yet. Why not ease yourself in gently by teaming a black top with bold leggings?  Or give a nod to the trend by opting for some of the muted tones and minimalist styles available.

2. Animal print

Animal print has not only experienced a resurgence on the catwalk (and in many wardrobes up and down the country), it has also filtered down into the active-wear collections too. From sports bras to leggings and even trainers too! Release your wild-side with this fun-fashion trend.

3. Delicate detailing

Whether HIIT classes are your thing or you’re more into relaxing yoga, you are sure to find some great multi-strap tops and sports bras to suit your tastes, which are not only practical, but they also add a bit of interest to your outfit.  We are also seeing more tops featuring intricate lace detailing to add textural interest to items, which up until recently have just been purely functional. This trend is recognition of the demand for ‘prettier’ sportswear which still offers the same high performance as conventional active-wear.

4. Ballet style

Ballet bar fitness classes are gaining popularity and to reflect this, so has ballerina styling in the world of workout gear.  There has been a noticeable increase in the number of ‘wrap-tops’ on the market as well as plenty of soft-grey tones and pale pinks.  Wrap tops are ideal for warming up in and are a versatile item of clothing to add to your gym-wear collection.

5. Khaki

If bold colours aren’t for you, on the other end of the scale is a rise in khaki and camouflage prints, great for getting you in the mood for powering through circuits and bootcamp style-fitness classes.

You don’t have to look far to find this trend online and on the high-street, so whether you opt to go head to toe in camo print or start slowly with a touch of khaki, this is a subtle on point look.

These are also great for our male readers as we appreciate ballet-style tops and animal print sports bras might not be for you!

6. Flower power

Don’t think floral prints and practical sportswear go together?  Think again; and expect to see this style a lot on the gym floor this season.  Floral fitness fashion is huge, but rather than bright floral patterns it is the darker prints which have taken the fitness wear market by storm.  It’s all about contemporary graphics and striking abstract prints, which are proving popular. What’s great about floral prints is that they are easy to style with any of your existing plain coloured separates for a look that is so on-trend - you’ll want to extend it to outside the gym.

7. Fancy footwear

Trainers are a must for most exercise and gym goers.  Let’s face it, trainers are the much-needed practical item we all need when working out so do these fashion trends really extend to here too?  It seems so. The choice of trainer designs has exploded in recent years and the amount of styles now available is pretty much endless. There are trainers to suit all budgets as well as different sports and activities.  The first thing to do when shopping for trainers is opt for a pair that is comfortable and provides the right support. Then you can look for a design and style, which reflects your personality. Whether it’s a solid colour, abstract print or personalised, choosing something that makes you smile and happy when you put them on is only going to enhance your gym or exercise experience.
