Our Guide for a Strong Start to 2022

The past 2 years have been extremely tough on us all and it has impacted us in different ways, but I think one thing is for certain, we have all had to focus a lot more on our health.

I wanted to think about what we should be leaving behind in 2021 and what we should be putting our energy into in 2022.

 

Mental Health

It's been a hot topic recently but it's worth talking about...exercise does wonders for your mental health! It doesn’t matter what form of exercise you do, just moving your body has incredible benefits on the brain.

‘According to this BBC report, studies suggest that lack of activity could lead to poor mental health as well as being a symptom of it.’

To feel the benefits, you don’t have to be exercising for hours every day, ‘Being active for 30 to 60 minutes every second day came out as the optimal routine.’

 

Focus on progress, not perfection

There is no such thing as 'perfect' yet we seem to strive for it. The more we fixate on every little detail, the more we lose sight of what our goal is. Your health and fitness journey is one that will evolve and therefore you will never reach your idea of ‘perfect’.

Great ways to measure progress include:

Time – Can you complete the same number of reps in a shorter time?

Distance – Are you able to run farther without stopping?

Weight - Are you able to lift heavier than before?        

General Health – Do you feel more energised during the day?

The reality is, you’re not going to feel motivated every day. There will be periods of time, whether that’s days or weeks, where you feel like you can't stay consistent and that’s normal. Don’t practice making excuses for not working on your health otherwise you will get good at quitting. Practice showing up for yourself even when you don’t feel like it, and it will become a lot easier.

There are things you can do on those days to make getting it done, a little easier.

Prep healthy meals in advance. There will be evenings where you don’t feel like making a healthy meal from scratch and the takeaway menu is awfully tempting. However, if you take the time to prep meals in advance on those days where you do have the motivation and time, then you have no excuse for not staying on track.

Our confidence has been knocked and tested during 2021 in many ways but it’s time to remind yourself that you can do hard things.

Making plans and tracking progress is a great tool for building your confidence and keeping you focused. A solid plan allows you to work on one thing at a time, removing the likelihood of becoming overwhelmed. Reward yourself each time you hit a milestone or achievement and most importantly set realistic goals. In 2021, we all had to adapt to a new way of life. Adopting this agile attitude to your health and fitness can actually have huge benefits. Life in general can be extremely fast paced and especially after Christmas, it can leave you feeling drained. If there are days when you feel like that, perhaps opt for a wellness class, something like yoga. Yoga is a great way to keep your muscles supple which in turn reduces that chance of injury. It’s workouts like this that will help you perform better during those intense sessions that you know and love. Investing time back to your body will never be wasted time.

My last bit of advice for 2022 is, don’t struggle alone, if you need help, ask!
