Returning safely to the gym

Posted by Justine Williams on 30-Nov-2020 09:06:00

We’re sure that many of you have been missing your trips to the gym over the past few weeks and with fitness facilities in England now allowed to reopen, as of Wednesday 2nd December, we’re excited to welcome you back through our doors.

We also want to reassure you of the steps we as an operator - and the fitness industry as a whole - are taking to make your local facility as safe as possible.

What do we know about the Covid-19 risk in leisure facilities?

According to the results of the recent SafeACTIVE survey, commissioned by leading fitness industry association Europe Active, preliminary data collected by King Juan Carlos University and AWRC-Sheffield Hallam University revealed extremely low levels of Covid-19 risk in fitness clubs and leisure facilities.

With more than 62 million visits analysed since the study’s official launch on 25th September 2020, the average infection rate within fitness clubs and leisure facilities (including both members and staff) sits at just 0.78 per 100,000 visits. This is only 487 cases across 14 countries: Germany, France, Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, Luxembourg, and The United Kingdom.

Industry associations ukactive and CIMSPA have also welcomed the reopening of gyms and leisure facilities in England.

They have been working hard in partnership with operators to gather data, which shows the sector is undertaking the highest levels of reporting and controlling cases of COVID-19.

Data collected from more than 1,900 sites across the UK found that these sites saw 45 million visits since first reopening, with an overall rate of 0.99 cases per 100,000 visits.

Your safety comes first

Your safety during visits to 1Life facilities is our top priority and before reopening in July following the first period of lockdown, we spent a great deal of time and resources to ensure our facilities were safe for the whole community to use and adhered to the highest standards of hygiene and social distancing.

These measures included increased cleaning schedules and hand sanitising stations, signs guiding members on how to act safely and responsibly and vigorous and robust team training to ensure everyone understands what is needed and expected in each facility.

These high standards will continue to be maintained across all of our sites.

What do I need to know when returning to the gym this time around?

As you return to your local 1Life centre following this second period of lockdown, there are some important things to be aware of.

Please book all sessions in advance via either the app or the website. Further information about how to do this can be found here: https://booking.1life.co.uk/Connect/mrmLogin.aspx?&_ga=2.238537792.1586730404.1606910501-1330634509.1604936655

In areas of the country which fall under Tier 3 restrictions, gyms and sports facilities will be open for individual exercise and exercise in single households or support bubbles only. Indoor group activities and exercise classes should not take place. Please refer to your local centre for further guidance on this.

As we know, regular exercise has so many benefits to both our physical and mental wellbeing - even helping to boost our immunity - and we are continuing to work hard to ensure our facilities provide a safe environment for our customers.

A big thank you for your continued support - we’re looking forward to seeing you again soon.
