Let’s face it, moving more is good for your overall health. Government guidelines state that healthy, adults aged 19 to 64 should try to be active daily and should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or brisk walking every week and strength exercises on 2 or more days a week that work all the major muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). Regular exercise can help reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type two diabetes, depression and other mental health issues.

It’s fair to say we are all working longer and harder and trying to get a good work-life balance can be tough. Technology makes employees contactable around the clock and this never-ending workday is damaging to your mental health and wellbeing, relationships and overall health and happiness. Regular exercise not only has a positive impact on your waistline but your mental wellbeing too, helping you feel calmer, more centred and able to focus on the important things in life!

So if you’re reading this and we’ve convinced you that regular exercise and moving more is a good thing here are a few things you might need to get started!

Look to invest in a good pair of supporting training shoes (unless you’re planning to swim everyday). It’s also important that you choose the right shoes for the activity you think you might be doing most of. Running shoes are lighter in weight than cross-training shoes, which are more supportive and better for general gym use. You might also consider using fitness apps for your smart phone or device as well as other activity tracking devices. These can track the distance you run or walk, track calories burned as well as monitoring your heart rate.

We also recommend you consider setting yourself a goal and work towards it. This will help keep your mind focussed and you’ll be less likely to skip a session or swap the gym for the pub!

It’s important that if you are starting a new exercise programme that you keep your body hydrated. Our body is made up of approximately 50% water. Drinking at least two litres of water a day is key to health. Mild dehydration, losing just 1.5 percent of your normal water volume, can alter your mood and one study found that dehydration is linked to fatigue, headaches, anxiety, and trouble concentrating.

One final tip, which is often overlooked but crucial to a healthy lifestyle is sleep! It’s recommended you get 7-9 hours sleep each night. Sleep is vital for health and wellbeing as during sleep growth hormones are produced and regeneration of our bodies occur, which is vital to daily function.
